Stains & Spills

The trick to this is firstly to do the following AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. The quicker you get to the problem, the better your chances of removing it completely.

Red Wine

This has got to be the most common of spills. It is imperative to get to this stain as quickly as possible and certainly whilst it is still wet to do a really good job of getting it up. First BLOT as much up as you can with a paper towels or a clean cloth. Then combine a teaspoon of carpet shampoo and a cup of hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl. Soak a clean sponge in the mixture and then gently blot the stain until it lifts. Then sponge it with plain warm water. Finally blot the area dry with a clean cloth or paper towels.

If you are partial to a nice glass of red wine it might be an idea to invest in a good commercial cleaning fluid for when that inevitable spill happens.

Blood Stains

Firstly blot the blood as much as you can. You should then mix half a cup of COOL water with one tablespoon of ammonia. Spray this onto the area and again blot it up as much as possible. You can then try another solution of equal amounts of water and washing up liquid. Again apply and keep blotting up until the stain is completely removed.

Candle Wax

Dripped candle wax onto your carpet? If this does happen, firstly remove as much of the hardened wax as you can with your fingers. Then get a cloth or paper towel (moistened) and use a WARM iron over the top of it to warm and melt the wax. If you can keep the cloth or towel moving around so as it will absorb all of the wax.

Grass Stains

Try using rubbing alcohol directly on the grass stains on your clothing. Then wash it as usual. Alternatively try using white vinegar on the stain.

Make Up & Lipstick:

You can try a pad that has dry cleaning solvent on it and apply to the area. You will want to rinse well and then wash as usual. Alternatively, go with a solution of ½ teaspoon of mild washing up liquid with just a teaspoon of ammonia to ½ cup of water. Always blot these stains with the detergent and keep turning them to pull out the stain.

Other Common Problems

Pet been all over the furniture?

A damp cloth or rubber glove will help to remove any pet hair from the upholstery of your furniture.

Have you got Chewing gum on the carpet?

Put ice in a small bag and apply to the affected area for about 15 minutes or until the gum has hardened. It should then be easy to remove using a blunt knife. If there is still gum left, repeat the process using fresh ice.

Have you had a smoker in the house?

There are actually a lot of great odour neutralisers on the market these days but if you prefer you can use a couple of very effective household products.

Placing saucers of white vinegar overnight in a room can really help to reduce the odours. Just remember to ventilate well afterwards.

You can always try sprinkling baking soda across your carpets and leave for at least a few hours. You can then simply vacuum off for a much fresher smelling home.

Have the kids stuck stickers all over the furniture?

These can be removed by coating them in white vinegar and then scraping off after it as soaked in.

Do your chrome appliances look messy?

Just put a few drops of baby oil in a small amount of water and then wipe over. You can then buff up with a dry soft cloth.

Just cleaned the oven then had a spill?

This can be easily sorted by sprinkling salt immediately onto it, then once the oven has cooled the burnt on food can be cleaned off with a damp sponge.
